Kate Mills was born Sept. 22, 1932, in Portland and educated at Catlin Gabel School and Stanford University. With her family she moved to the upper Hood River Valley in the mid-’70s. Kate loved animals and the outdoors. She relished a soul-stirring play, whether in Hood River, Ashland or Broadway. She was active in the Hood River Valley community, helping found the Columbia Center for the Arts, Hood River Valley Residents Committee (“Thrive”) and Friends of Timberline. Kate recruited friends, raised money, wrote letters and lobbied to help enact the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Act. She served on boards of the Gorge Community Foundation, Thrive Hood River, the High Desert Museum, Maryhill Museum of Art, and the Hood River Classic Horse Show.
For nearly 60 years, Kate Mills was a fearless and untiring champion of Oregon’s natural beauty, especially the Columbia River Gorge and Hood River Valley. She was smart, funny, kind and generous to everyone she met. Her legacy lies in the family she raised, the landscapes she helped preserve and the many people that loved her.
One scholarship award of $1,500.
