Maria Reierson was raised in Pre-World War II southern Germany. She emigrated to the US, entering Ellis Island. She put herself through college and graduate school, eventually becoming an economist at Bankers Trust, where she met her husband, Roy Reierson. Maria’s son, Lars Reierson, funds this scholarship in her honor to reward a student who is an immigrant to the US and not a native-born, or birthright citizen.

CRITERIA
- Cumulative GPA of 2.5
- First-generation born in the United States, a naturalized citizen, or born in another country (with or without legal documentation)
- Applicant must attend a four-year college or university.
- Demonstrated Financial Need
- Graduating senior of Hood River Valley High School

- Essay: The Hood River Rotary Club is a community service organization whose motto is “Service Above Self.” Established in 1927, the Club is part of Rotary International, a global network of more than 45,000 clubs and 1.2 million members.
- In 400 to 700 words, write an essay on what “Service Above Self” means to you. Share at least one example of your community service and describe the effect it had on you personally and on those you served. Reflect on how this concept relates to your own motives and values, and discuss your plans and aspirations for life after high school, including how you might incorporate community service into your future.
Community service may include volunteering in your school, community, or place of worship, as well as service to your family—such as caring for an elderly relative, supporting younger siblings, or holding an after-school job to help with household expenses.
