Roy Reierson was born and raised on a Minnesota farm, where he learned the value of hard work and curiosity about the world beyond the fields. At sixteen, he left home to attend college, ultimately earning both a Ph.D. in Economics and an MBA. After serving his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Dr. Reierson went on to become one of the world’s foremost economists, serving on the Council of Economic Advisers for several U.S. presidents.
This scholarship honors his legacy by supporting a student of exceptional academic achievement — ideally someone who, like Roy, has roots in agriculture and a passion for learning.
One scholarship award of $3000
CRITERIA:
- Cumulative GPA of 2.5
- Experience, paid or unpaid, working in agriculture
- Applicant must attend a four-year college or university
- Graduating senior from Hood River Valley High School
- Academic excellence

- Essay: The Hood River Rotary Club is a community service organization whose motto is “Service Above Self.” Established in 1927, the Club is part of Rotary International, a global network of more than 45,000 clubs and 1.2 million members.
- In 400 to 700 words, write an essay on what “Service Above Self” means to you. Share at least one example of your community service and describe the effect it had on you personally and on those you served. Reflect on how this concept relates to your own motives and values, and discuss your plans and aspirations for life after high school, including how you might incorporate community service into your future.
Community service may include volunteering in your school, community, or place of worship, as well as service to your family—such as caring for an elderly relative, supporting younger siblings, or holding an after-school job to help with household expenses.
