Roderick Alber was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island. He served in both World War I and World War II and was devoted to his family and to building a better life in his adopted country.
This scholarship was established by his grandson, Lars Reierson, to assist the children of U.S. military service members in pursuing post-secondary education. It honors the commitment and resilience of military families and supports students as they work toward their educational and career goals.
This is one scholarship award of $3,000.
CRITERIA
- Cumulative GPA of 2.5
- Applicant has a parent who is an active-duty, veteran, or retired member of the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Space Force, Coast Guard, National Guard, or any branch of the U.S. Military Reserves
- HRVHS senior
- For students attending a four-year college or university, community college, or vocational/trade school or program

- Essay: The Hood River Rotary Club is a community service organization whose motto is “Service Above Self.” Established in 1927, the Club is part of Rotary International, a global network of more than 45,000 clubs and 1.2 million members.
- In 400 to 700 words, write an essay on what “Service Above Self” means to you. Share at least one example of your community service and describe the effect it had on you personally and on those you served. Reflect on how this concept relates to your own motives and values, and discuss your plans and aspirations for life after high school, including how you might incorporate community service into your future.
Community service may include volunteering in your school, community, or place of worship, as well as service to your family—such as caring for an elderly relative, supporting younger siblings, or holding an after-school job to help with household expenses.
